Missions Weekend

We are about to have a weekend that helps us to understand our makeup for mission work. I trust there will be some "A-ha" moments for many of us.

For those of you who have completed the survey, we want to say Thank You. Those will help the presenters from Global Ministries key in on who we are and how we strengthen the weak spots.

If you have not completed the survey and would like to, you are still able to complete that throughout the day today. The assessment will be closed Thursday morning.

Kaleb Peters Mission Trip to India

Kaleb is planning a trip to India for the month of January 2017. Here are some details; While in India we visit an orphanage called the Home of Love (HOL) It's an all girls orphanage that saves girls from the sex trafficking industry and from broken homes. We put on a Vacation Bible School program for them while we are there. We are currently the only non-Indian group that visits them.

We also work with Madras Christian Council of Social Services (MCCSS) This organization also rescues girls from sex trafficking but they also help the elderly and struggling mothers. Their facilities are small and they are in desperate need of expansion because of the amount of people they reach out to. We have a great relationship with the Director Isabel and she is very involved in the community and brings us along on city projects and gets us involved in the community as well. We usually have a day where we interact with the kids where we dance, listen to their stories, and have a meal or watch a movie with them. We have been working with MCCSS for 5 years.

We also have a relationship with the kids at Home of Hope. The kids there are HIV/Aids victims and are not valued in society. We visit with them because they are abandoned and they do not get a lot of people loving on them. Once again we are the only non-Indian group that visits them and only one of a few groups altogether that does so. We have been working with this group for 4 years.

We also team up with Madras Christian College's social work department where their social work students lead us to some local villages and learn about village life and the needs there.

We do some educational things so that we can learn about the religion, culture and people. We'll go to some temples and bazaars, etc. We want to make sure that we don't go to India and act like we are better or our way is better without knowing the people, and culture.

In the past we have visited with IJM (International Justice Mission) and CMCT (Christian Missions Charitable Trust) and we hope to visit them this year as well. IJM does a lot of work to help rescue persons from bonded slavery (similar to the type of slavery in the US 150+ years ago). CMCT has an orphanage and a free hospital clinic. They also run a few leper colonies. We learn about what they do, why it matters, and what we might be able to do to help.

One of the goals we have for the trip is for us to learn a lot about a very different culture and people and how Christ can impact them and us through them.

The trip is roughly 40% learning abut the people of India, its history, culture, and religion/philosophy, and 60% volunteerism, learning about opportunities for future work, prayer, and current needs.
